Who, Me? Yes, You!
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
This Thursday was Chaf Cheshvan, the birthday of the Rebbe Rashab. On one hand, when we remember and celebrate special days of the Rabbeim we increase our connection and become inspired. On the other hand we can wonder how it is relevant to us today in our situation. The Rebbe asks this question with regard to the well-known story brought in Hayom Yom for the 9th of Cheshvan.
When my father was four or five years old he went to his grandfather, the Tzemach Tzedek, on Shabbat Vayeira, and began to cry as he asked, "Why did G-d show Himself to our father Avraham - but He does not show Himself to us?" The Tzemach Tzedek answered him: "When a tzadik decides at the age of ninety-nine years that he should be circumcised, he deserves that G-d appear to him."
The Rebbe Rashab was a son of a Rebbe, and part of part of a dynasty of Rabbeim. In general they didn’t speak about themselves. This story was told to us so that we should to give us kochos to learn to be this way. How can we expect to be like them?
The Rebbe (Likutei Sichos v. 15) says that not only can we expect this of ourselves; this should be the way that we approach chinuch as well. We should inculcate within our children the desire that Hashem should be revealed to them. They should have the intention that the reason for all Torah and mitzvos is to reveal Moshiach.
This is a very nice vort for the Shabbos table but what has it got to do with our environment and our streets etc.? Isn’t it just wishful thinking to expect to reach such a level? How can we expect this of a 20 year old who tells that he never saw the Rebbe? He has shut himself down from listening, even if he doesn’t let you know. How do we explain this to him?
This week is parshas Chayei Sarah. The Rebbe asks how can the name of the parsha be the Life of Sarah when the parsha begins after her passing. In general the life of a tzaddik is not just what we see physically rather the essence of the tzaddik is their ruchnius (as explained in Igeres HaKodesh 27). Actually we can never be certain that it is true life until we see his or her children and students continuing in the way the that they lived for. An example of this in the Chumash is the continuation of the life of Sarah in her children Yitzchok and Rivka. When Rivka entered the tent Sarah’s candles continued once again to burn from Shabbos to Shabbos. This continuation is because the real life of a tzaddik is their emunah, ahavah and yirah. This continues and grows year after year in the generations to follow through our hiskashrus, connection and our following in their ways.
I’ve mentioned a few times that once Moshe Hecht wrote the Rebbe for help and the Rebbe responded that he already sent a shliach to his city and he gave him the kochos. His name is Moshe Hecht (himself!) he should go speak with him. The Rebbe sent him the message that he already had given him all the kochos he needed to succeed. He just needed to uncover them and use them.
When we attend a fabrengen for a chassidishe Yom Tov we know its special. By just showing up and eating some kugel and herring, we will not be affected. We don’t say l’chaim just to get high. We need to uncover the block of the physical and allow the neshama to feel and reveal the connection that’s already there.
We need to spend time learning sichos and maamarim and realize that the Rebbe is speaking to us. We need to think about what it means to us. We need to search and find the connection and then apply it. Then its real, then it will have continuity.
Once Michoel der Alter gave a mashal to his students about how to learn chassidus. It was a story of a simple unlearned person who hired a melamed to teach his children in a village distant from the community. Since the man was unlearned, he would also have the melamed read him his mail. One day a telegram arrived with the sad news of his father’s passing. When the man heard the melamed read the news he fainted on the spot. Michoel der Alter asked: “Certainly the melamed should have fainted because he read it first! Why didn’t he faint?” He answered; “Because it wasn’t his father”. So too with chassidus, when you realize that its our Father then its different. When we learn chassidus this way it affects us.
So too with nigunim; by tapping into the spiritual which we already have, we allow the neshama to feel the connection. Moshe Hecht needs to speak to Moshe Hecht because the Rebbe gave him the kochos already.
So too with chinuch when Yaakov lo meis, when the Rebbe is still alive, then it is definitely possible to reach a very high standard. Because its not, and it never was, about the physical, it’s the spiritual connection that makes it all possible.
There’s a story of a tzaddik (not Chabad) that told his son near his passing; I am no longer in a body. The son held his hand and said I’m touching your hand. The tzaddik responded; you are holding a hand because you only feel the physical. So too when we grasp hold of the physical we are unable to feel the spiritual.
By connecting to the Rebbe and living and doing Torah and mitzvos with the intention to reveal Moshiach may we merit to see the complete revelation of Moshiach Now
Good Shabbos

By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
This week Shabbos falls out on the day after the 7th of Marcheshvan, the 8th of Marcheshvan. What is unique about the 7th of Marcheshvan? It’s the day we add “v sein tal u’matar” in davening in Eretz Yisroel. It’s the day that we begin to daven for rain (In the rest of the world we begin to say “v sein tal u’matar” in early December). The reason we wait until the 7th of Marcheshvan is to allow enough time for the last person to arrive home after spending Yom Tov in Jerusalem. The entire Jewish people delay to pray for their basic necessity of rain so as to not cause difficulty to even one Jew who is traveling. Even that Jew himself has his own fields and also needs the rain! Nevertheless, we do not want to cause suffering to even one Jew as he travels. This is an important lesson in ahavas Yisroel that we learn from the 7th of Marcheshvan.
We also learn in halacha that we are still connected to the Yomim Tovim of Tishrei until the 7th of Marchshvan. The real “Yaakov halach l’darcho” only begins after the 7th of Marcheshvan and usually falls out in the week of parshas Lech Lecha, which discusses the travels of Avraham Avinu.
What significance is there for us to learn today in 2013 about Avraham Avinu’s travels, something that occurred 3 ½ thousand years ago? Because the Torah is everlasting, and word Torah means horah-lesson, the Torah is speaking to each one of us in every generation, including this one. Every Jew is likened to Avraham. We all travel on a path with a shlichus from Hashem to reveal Hashem, and make this world a fitting dwelling place for Hashem. The Torah instructs every Jew: “Lech Lecha- leave, go out; m’artzecha, m’moladitcha, m’beis avicha- from your land, your birthplace, from your father’s house.”
Why didn’t Hashem tell Avraham Avinu where to go? He was very clear about where he should leave from, but where he should go to, he left unknown, only a place; “That I will show you”. Usually you need to know where you are going to pack accordingly.
Also, the order seems reversed. The order to tell someone to travel is from the closest to the furthest. It would seem best to begin by first saying to leave your father’s house, then the town you were born, then your entire country, here the Torah’s order is the exact opposite?
Chassidus explains that this is because the Torah is not just speaking about physical location, but more essentially, about spiritual location. “Lech lecha!”, go to yourself, your essence, reveal who you really are. First, leave your eretz, your land. Eretz is the same root as ratzon-will, meaning leave your personal desires of ‘I’ want this or that behind. Next, leave behind “moladitcha”, the emotions and senses that you have arrived at or given birth to from your intellect and your situation. Then also go away from your father’s house, meaning from your intellect, which is likened to parents, wisdom and understanding that raise children, emotions, in their ‘home’, meaning under their influence. We need to go away from all of that. Where do we go? We go to Shul, we go to the way of Torah and mitzvos, and we go to do mivtzoyim. Then and only then will I show you your true essence. In this way each of us is like Avraham Avinu leaving Terach’s house.
This is why Hashem didn’t explain to Avraham the details about where he was going. It is because the essence is to leave your land, your birthplace, and your father’s house. They may even be the correct at times but they are all motivated by you. Hashem told Avraham, go wherever I tell you, it doesn’t matter where, just that your going where I send you. Be ready to let go, listen and follow, and then you will reach the Promised Land.
Once R. Yisroel Gordon told over a vort that he heard from the Prevoius Rebbe at a fabrengen on the pasuk; “Ana Hashem, ki ani avdecha- Please Hashem, because I am your servant”. “Ana Hashem”, (don’t read ‘please’, instead read ‘wherever’.) Hashem, wherever you want I will go. Why? “Ki ani avdecha”; because I am your servant.
This is our goal, we desire Hashem’s path, and this is what we go with on our way, the Jewish way of Yaakov, “Yaakov halach l’darcho”. As the Yiddish saying goes; “nisht men geit, men feirt”; we aren’t going, we are being led.
May we immediately see with our physical eyes the return of the Shechina to Yerushalayim, the Beis Hamikdash and the entire world, led by Moshiach now to the geula ha’amitis v’hashleima, to the land that He will show us.

Yaakov Halach l’Darcho
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
It is well known that we declare “Yaakov Halach l’Darcho” in Lubavitch at the end of the Tishrei Yomim Tovim. Tishrei was full of Yomim Tovim and now we are back to our routines. Yaakov represents the part of us that deals with the world. Yaakov’s name means to hold onto and control the heel of Eisav. Eisav represents the world. We go about our way to make this world a dwelling place for Hashem, knowing Hashem in all our ways and doing everything l’shem Shomayim.
As the distance from Tishrei grows with every passing day and we traverse the vast expanse of winter through Cheshvan until Pesach we ask ourselves how can we fulfill our mission without faltering? We don’t feel the awe of Rosh Hashana or the dancing of Simchas Torah. How can we remember and how can we keep going?
The answer is that we need to constantly long and aspire for the month of Tishrei. We could have had, and we did have a great Tishrei. As high as it was it’s not complete until we connect it to our daily living. If we don’t then its like something that has been stored away in the attic, something we reminisce over. We need to live connected to the Tishrei experience throughout the year.
When we feel challenged throughout the year to do mitzvos, we concentrate on the moment that we stood before Hashem by tekiyos; how we felt that “You are my King and I am your servant”, always, 385 days a year 24 hours a day. The inspiration will help us overcome any complacent thought. If we falter we go back to the most powerful moments of Yom Kippur, to Neila, Achas b’Shana, the saying of the Shema and Hashem Hu HaElokim; it will inspire us to change.
If our mood drops and we have sad thoughts we shift our thoughts to the simcha shel mitzvah of Sukkos and the simcha of the Torah on Simchas Torah. This will lift our spirits. If we ever feel lonely we recall the unity of the entire Tishrei from parshas Nitzavim and Rosh Hashana though all the Yomim Tovim until Simchas Torah and the fabrengen on Shabbos Breishis; how we were together as one with Hashem.
This is all connected to parshas Noach. Was Noach just one person all-alone against the entire world? No! He was constantly with Hashem; “Es HaElokim hishalach Noach- Noach went with Hashem”. You can be at odds with the entire world; nevertheless you walk together with Hashem straight toward the Geula Ha’amitis v’haShleima!
A Good Shabbos
