Don’t Be Afraid to Take a Stand, You’re not Alone
Rabbi Shimon Raichik

In the last few articles we have discussing how important it is to implement Chassidus into our daily lives. Often it can be challenging because we feel that Chassidus is so lofty and therefore unrelated to us in our lowly state. So what can we do? Some decide: this (Chassidus) cannot possibly be speaking to me; after all I know who I am and how I act. This perspective is both overly humble and just plan wrong. The Rebbe, in the Basi l'Gani maamar for 5720-1960 (Chapter 3), calls this "anivus shel sheker- misplaced humility" and harmful to avodas Hashem. This attitude of: who am I, what am I is often accompanied with disbelief that our and Torah and Tefilla have an effect on high. It's hard to conceive that our personal avodah nurtures the malachim because we feel so far from any level or loftiness so that whatever we do is by definition of no interest on high. This kind of defeated approach says that Hashem doesn't find value because ‘I am a nobody’. All of this is opens the door to the yetzer hara to chip away at us: to miss a mincha here, a maariv there, then a hidur mitzvah. What difference does it make if there is no effect.

The Baal Shem Tov compares this attitude to a Gemara. The Gemara Gitten (56a) tells the story of Bar Kamza. The following section of the story continues after Bar Kamza has been humiliated and thrown out of Kamza’a party. [Bar Kamza] went and said to Caesar, “The Jews have rebelled against you.”[Caesar] said to him, “How can I tell?” [Bar Kamza] said to him, “Send a sacrifice to them and see whether they offer it.”[Caesar] sent a young calf with [Bar Kamza]. While on the way, [Bar Kamza] made a blemish on its upper lip, or as some say, on the white of its eye, in a place which is considered a blemish to [the Jews], but not to [the Romans]. The Rabbis considered sacrificing it for political peace, (but) Rabbi Zechariah ben Abkulas said, “They will say that blemished animals may be slaughtered on the altar.” They considered killing [Bar Kamza] so that he not go and inform, (but) Rabbi Zechariah said to them, “They will say that one who blemishes a consecrated animal shall be killed.” Rabbi Yohanan said, “The discretion of Rabbi Zechariah ben Abkulas destroyed our House, burned our Temple, and exiled us from our Land.”

The Baal Shem Tov says that the Gemara is teaching that the reason for the churbon was because R. Zecharia refused to take a stand. So too with our self defeating thinking that our avodah has no value. By not taking a stand with regard to our own avodah we are destroying the internal Beis Hamikdash, which is within each person. The Baal Shem Tov then teaches that if we will meditate upon the fact that every word of Torah and Tefilla is so precious to Hashem that it’s similar to a great and awesome King that kisses the lips of the one who utters each word, as he utters them. When we contemplate this it enables us to serve Hashem with great joy and gladness of heart in all aspects of life. Then we are ready to give everything we have when we realize the effect our avodah has and brings down into all of the worlds. We run to daven, to learn a do mitzvos because this avodah is building the Beis Hamikdash.

On Shavuos in 1969 during one of the suedos upstairs, the Rebbe asked Reb Zalmen Teibel to sing a nigun. He responded that for him it was an av melacha. The Rebbe answered that an av melacha is permissible on Yom Tuv for ochel nefesh; and that he should sing. He sang the nigun “Ana avdah” (the words from this nigun are said during the prayer of Brich Shmei when we open the Aron HaKodesh for Krias HaTorah) which the Rebbe accepted with great love and passion. Afterwards he instructed him to teach it to the yungeleit and bachurim. In the early 1980’s after Rosh Hashana when Reb Zalmen Teibel came for kos shel bracha the Rebbe stopped and sang with him that nigun (Ana Avda). The Rebbe then said to him that we say those words on Rosh Hashana, Eseres Yemei Teshuva, Yom Kippur etc., until Moshiach, and further. The Rebbe sang this niggun with great enthusiasm because it expresses who we are, our essence that we are servants and Hashem is waiting for us to serve him, and he is kissing us as we learn and daven. That’s our simcha, that we can do this for the King as He is on the highest level. A Jew can accomplish that which even a malach cannot accomplish as a neshama in a body in this physical world.

The Tale of Two Souls
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

This year during a trip to New York for Yud Shevat, I got into a conversation with a yungerman about the Previous Rebbe's Yud Shevat maamar for 5710-1950 as well as the Rebbe's maamarim for 5714-1954 and 5734-1954. As is known every year the Rebbe focused a different chapter of the 20 chapters of the Maamar from 5710-1950 in depth and in detail. In the maamar the Previous Rebbe explains the animal soul is able to first hider and then cover over on the G-dly soul. The maamar explains briefly that the animal soul tries to fool the G-dly soul into passivity and complacency by first convincing it that there is no harm in skipping a small mitzvah or by transgressing a small aveirah (What is considered small or big is a subject for a different article). From there it lures the neshama further into greater complacency and bigger aveiras. The yungerman wanted to know why the Rebbe goes into so much greater detail in his maamarim than the Previous Rebbe, asking many questions and explaining how and why it is that animal soul is able to get the upper hand. What difference does it make how we got there, how our yetzer hara trapped us? What matters is that it happened and now it's time to get out of it! Just explain the best way out? Why all the explanations, what purpose does it fulfill?

Once, a Jew from Chicago asked the Rebbe for advice on an investment. The Rebbe told him not to invest. For whatever reason, he ended up making the investment anyway and lost his money. At a later date while in yechidus he told the Rebbe a story about a Jewish thief. The thief used to work by night entering homes through chimneys and windows. On one occasion he inadvertently broke into the house of the Rav of the town. By the time he realized his mistake he was standing face to face with the Rav in his living room. The Rav, not realizing why he was there assumed he came for help and asked him what he needed. He responded that he needed to know how to get out of this place! This man was telling the Rebbe I buried myself in debt by not listening to your advice, now tell me what to do I get out of my problems.

When an addict goes to therapist for help, he needs to be able to explain what caused him to fall into his difficulties. Once the therapist understands his situation, only then will he be able to help find a solution. So too spiritually it may seem to us like we have two different animal souls: one that comes to shul and disturbs us while another that the goes out into he world and gets caught up in it’s follies. The truth is that there is only one animal soul and its our job is to make sure that we recognize it and speak to the real challenges it faces. The same animal soul that doesn’t let us daven is the same one that wants to stay in bed and not go to shul. It’s the same one that wants to find the best restaurant and maybe watch a movie or go to Las Vegas. It’s not two different souls. The animal soul needs a good translation to properly define its experiences in order get above its challenges. Reb Gershon Dov Behar, a big chosid once said that sometimes while he is in the middle of davening he stops and translates the words of tefillah into Yiddish so that he'll know that it means him.

The question that we must ask ourselves is if we really understand and recognize that we have a neshama that is a portion of Hashem that is able to overcome any challenge.  “Haneshama sh'nsata bi- The soul which you invested in me”, means me, Shimon, not someone else. Once I understand and realize the power of the neshama that is within me how could it possibly be that I am not fully capable to overcome any obstacle? How could there be any obstacle? How is it possible for the animal soul to stand in the way? This is what the maamar needs to explain. The maamar explains how the animal soul is able to place obstacles and how we have a portion of Hashem within us ("Chelek Hashem Amo") that gives us the internal wherewithal to surmount all of them. We can overcome all of them today in 2014 not just back in the old days in Liozna. Hashem will lift us up, above the obstacles. We just have to want.

The Alter Rebbe is speaking to me, to My Life Today
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

There is a famous story about a famous chosid, Reb Shmuel Munkas. The first time Reb Shmuel Munkas met the Alter Rebbe was in Liozna late one night. Reb Shmuel was looking through town for the house that was lit, certain that it would be the Alter Rebbe staying up late learning. Sure enough he found the correct house and when the Alter Rebbe answered the door Reb Shmuel asked for a place to stay. The Rebbe hesitated asking him why from all the houses that were available in town did he specifically need to stay in his house. The conversation continued with Reb Shmuel insisting on staying until finally the Alter Rebbe threatened to have his goy remove him. Reb Shmuel cried and said; “Rebbe, my goy is stronger than yours”.

What is this story really all about? Reb Shmuel knocked on the door and the Alter Rebbe threw him out etc., why? The Alter Rebbe was asking him; “What are you missing in your service of Hashem, what do you really seek?” There are many “houses”, meaning approaches in the service of Hashem. What brings you specifically to me? The Alter Rebbe wanted to show him, to arouse within him that there is an inner battle, an animal soul within that he has to deal with, and that it’s strong. He was hinting to him that only chassidus and avodah would enable him to overcome its strength. When Reb Shmuel heard that something fundamental was missing in his service to Hashem and that he needed to deal with it, he realized that he really didn’t know what to do. He became hurt and started to cry. He showed the Alter Rebbe with his answer (My goy is bigger) that he understood, and wanted to become his chosid.

The Alter Rebbe explains in the preface to the Tanya that people have many types of questions in avodas Hashem that need to be answered. He states that all of the answers to each individual are to be found within the Tanya. When we learn the Tanya, we may ask, exactly where are those answers? We read about a Nefesh Elokis, a G-dly Soul and a Nefesh Habahamis, an animal soul. We learn about the powers and garments of the soul and how it works. We learn about the level of a Tzadik and a Rasha, and finally a Benoni. But where are the answers to the questions? Why doesn’t the Alter Rebbe just lay out the questions in order, problem one then two etc., and then answer them?

In the Tanya the Alter Rebbe is teaching us first who we are, what our problem is and how the Torah and mitzvos are close to us. We need to understand our makeup, what all the possible levels of being are: a Tzadik a Rasha and a Benoni. We need to know who we are and where we stand.

While I was in yeshiva in Brunoy, my wife’s uncle, Reb Aaron Yosef Belinitsky once said: “Shimon, what do you think; that the G-dly and animal souls are like two cats in a sack having a fight?” The Alter Rebbe is addressing the fabric of our being; he’s speaking to us in our situation, not some theory or intellectual philosophy. When I learn the Tanya, and read about the animal soul, it’s not speaking about the one in shul, aloof and detached. It’s about my animal soul, and how it walks in the world, how it’s affected by the culture the language and activities of the world in all aspects. The Alter Rebbe explains how I function and my capability to be in control. The Tanya explains how I am in charge and how it’s up to me. This is what the first 12-13 chapters of Tanya explain. Our job is to apply it to our daily lives and not dismiss it as a theory. By taking it to heart we can avoid many challenges. When we see that we aren’t making progress we can take an honest look at the nature of our situation and modify our course. This is the opportunity the Alter Rebbe gives us. We are able to change because we learn the Tanya in this way.

Also deeper, the Tanya addresses our moods, our seeming lack of resources and our disappointments along the way. Chapters 26-30 teach about how to deal with our moods with practical advice. This sefer is not written for someone in a cave in Tzfas or an astronaut on Mars, it’s speaking to us. We change from within because we realize that it’s about the powers that Hashem has given us to do our part when the animal soul fools us.  When I realize that every mitzvah connects to Hashem and every aveirah disconnects, I look and see that I am not worse that the kal sh’b’kalim, the most cynical and dismissive from among us. When it comes to challenges of in emunah in Hashem (avodah zara etc.) I see that even the most cynical have mesiras nefesh. Therefore whatever my challenges are that I feel I cannot overcome with regard to any mitzvah, I cannot be less.

The bottom line is that we can learn chassidus realizing that it’s speaking to us personally and the life we know it all it’s detail. What is most important is that Moshiach is a reality, not just a nice speech like the “I Had a Dream” speech. We need to get over looking at it as if it were a dream. By learning chassidus the way it is intended, to be learned and lived, we come to recognize that Moshiach is real and galus is a dream. Through living in the ways of chassidus may we merit to see the complete revelation of Moshiach in all aspects Now!

Letter to Anash Community-A Call to Action

Important Letter - A CALL OF ACTION-!!

Dear Anash Member,

We are sure you've heard about the great excitement that’s taking place in our city in the last few weeks – the first ever Unzere Kinder convention. One may ask, what’s its purpose?

Its simple. We are living in the times where so many outside challenges and influences are coming at our children from all corners. It is becoming quite challenging to give our kids that extra touch of Hiskashrus to our Rebbe.

The Rebbe has always taught us, during times of such, you add a peulah – ve’hameisa hu haikar! Being that Yud Shvat this year comes out onShabbos, we grabbed the opportunity and several moisdois of Southern California got together to put on this convention. We will teach our kinder thatYud Shvat is a time to be connected and increase our Hiskashrus with our Rebbe and be proud Lubavitcher Anash children.

Our Scholar in Residence will be Rabbi and Mrs. Shimmy Weinbaum who are the program directors of Tzivos Hashem International and have been credited, literally, with keeping our Unzere Lubavitcher kinder in the fold.

For 36 hours, the kids will given a shot of chassidishkeit through lectures, workshops and fun activities - all with one goal. To connect the Rebbe'schildren with the Rebbe and empower the leaders of tomorrow!

A nominal fee of $36 is required with the registration to help us defray the many more expenses involved. To attend the convention you MUST register. Registration comes with the following: a welcoming kit, a place where you will be hosted for Shabbos and Friday night meals. Shabbos day will be 13 hours straight of chassidishkeit and fun - including a fully catered Shabbos meal and workshops given by many local Rabbi and Rebbetzins and local talents,

After a fun fulled Shabbos, we will culminate with a Concert/Musical farbrengen (only those who are registered will be allowed in the venue) and much more! Our very own Unzere 8th Day will be leading the kinder with Lubavitcher Niggunim and some of their main hits!

And  of course ------THE CHEDER MENACHEM CHOIR.

Feel assured, hundreds of hours are being put in for an unforgettable Shabbaton convention - with one thing in mind... YOUR KIDS - Unzere Kinder!

As of this writing, we are 95% full - don't leave your child behind!
