Completing the Mission
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

As we approach the twentieth Gimmel Tammuz we see different approaches to the day. While everyone is focused on the geula, some are more somber while others are reflecting and others are just focused on the future. It’s difficult for many, 20 years is a long time…

In 5752 the Rebbe declared in a Sicha that each and every one of us is an Admor.  What does it mean to be an Admor? Do we all need to go out and get a streimel and a silver cane? By telling us that each and every one of us is an Admor the Rebbe empowered us. Just as Moshe Rabbenu empowered the Jewish people at the end of the 40 years of wandering in the desert when he said; Today you have been given a heart to know and eyes to see etc., so too the Rebbe has empowered each one of us.

Yet there are many who say that we do not have the power to accomplish like before when we don’t see the Rebbe. It looks physically impossible. When R. Yochnon ben Zakai saw the impending churbon and was given one request he asked for Yavne and the Chachamim. Why didn’t he ask for Yerushalayim? It’s nice to have a yeshiva but what about the Jewish people? Some answer that he was looking to preserve the spirit of Judiasm for the future generations. The Rebbe explained that R. Yochnon ben Zakai was trying to prevent the churbon with the zechus of limud haTorah for the sake of the entire Jewish people. We see that the Rebbe as well directed the children to learn another pasuk, another mishna and to do another good deed before the Six Day War for the protection of the people and the land of Israel (He also introduced Mivtza Tefillin). It helps because we are all one big body and every small act changes the world, protects and brings Moshiach. This message of emunah bitachon and empowerment we see on every page of the Rebbe’s Letters Sichos and Maamarim.

Yes it’s bitter and yes it hurts as we approach the twentieth Gimmel Tammuz. We still feel the effects of the bitter galus the tears and the global crises. Yet with all of that we are strong in our emunah and bitachon that we will prevail. That with us is the power to change the tide. The Rebbe gave and gives each one of us us the power to teach and to lead, each in his or her own way.

After so many years, we in Lubavitch have a great opportunity to realize the Rebbe’s brochos by making ourselves a fitting vessel for those brachos, as it says; Barcheinu Avinu kulanu k’echod. By rising above personal interest or struggle, above any political or idealistic separation, together as one big community we can go forward in an even greater way than we have until now. By become a fitting vessel; we have a historic opportunity to receive the brochos the Rebbe gave us that are waiting to be realized.

To do this we need to connect. We need to dwell on the positive. The children need to go to camp and to school and off to shlichus. Yes there is a lot to accomplish because our mission is not complete until the revelation of Moshiach. We connect by realizing that the Rebbe is speaking to me as an individual. By learning the Rebbe’s Sichos Maamarim and Letters this way lets the power of pure emunah prevail.

By attaching ourselves to the Rebbe this twentieth year in an even greater way than until now in every area until the level that each one of us is and Admor to accomplish each according to his or her abilities, together we will bring and reveal the return of the Shechina to Tzion together with all of the Rabbeim and Tzaddikim from all the generations with the Rebbe at the front, immediately Now!

Knowing Who We Are and Preparing for Gimmel Tammuz begins at Home..but does not end there

By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

Leading up to this Gimmel Tammuz, the twentieth year since 5744- 1994, a recent flurry of new biographies of the Rebbe’s life has been published.

Although this is not the place to comment on any of the details written in the new books, in general these biographies fill a need for the world at large as the following quote from a book review demonstrates:

“The Most Influential Rabbi in Modern History: Read it and you will become a better person. From reading this book, one can better understand how Rabbi Schneerson had a positive impact on hundreds of thousands – and his life’s work continues to live on today through the organization, Chabad-Lubavitch he built which remains the largest Jewish organization in the world.”

The world needs to know about the Rebbe. The Rebbe is everyone’s Rebbe and they are better off in every way by reading about him. As Lubavitcher Chassidim, Anash, we have our way of preparing ourselves for Gimmel Tammuz. We look into the Sichos Maamarim and letters of the Rebbe and share with our families the stories that have been passed to us through our Rabbeim and Chassidim.

Recently a yunger man told me that he went through the system but he doesn’t know the history of the Rabbeim. He then said he understands those that read the books because they want to know more about the Rebbe. I thought to myself, how can that be? Obviously he hasn’t read the Memoirs of the Previous Rebbe, the Sefer HaToldos and Likutei Dibburim. Therefore he doesn’t know the history of the Rabbeim! When a bachur gets to yeshiva, we teach him the Torah, but there’s no system to teach who we are as Chassidim. It’s expected that that the father and mother taught all of that before he came to yeshiva.

When my father sent my brother Yossie and I to Montreal, it was a half a year after our Bar Mitzvah. There was a young man, Rabbi Pinchas Korf who would fabreng with our group every Thursday night. He didn’t bring mashka, he brought the sefer HaTomim and read us stories of Chassidim. A year or two later there was an older bachor would come to our room before we went to sleep and read us the long letter of the Previous Rebbe about Chassidim that was still in typed manuscript and had not yet come out in print. That’s how I got to know our history. It gave me a geshmak, great pleasure to hear these stories and it inspired me to go on to read the stories in Sefer HaToldos etc.

As Gimmel Tammuz approaches, we prepare by learning Sichos Maamarim, letters and stories. These days are a good time to speak with your family. You don’t need to sit all day in shul and fabreng, fabreng with your family also. Prepare in advance what you are going to say on Friday night and Shabbos day. Tell your family stories of Chassidim that will warm them up and inspire them. Then your children will know who they are from the Rabbeim. With that chayus and inspriration we have the energy to go out into the world and complete the mission that the Rebbe has given us to bring Moshiach. The better that we connect and live with the Rabbeim and Chassidim, the more fitting shluchim we are to represent the Rebbe’s message in the best way.

May we all merit to see the Rebbe again with our physical eyes with the revelation of Moshiach Now!

Staying Connected gives us the Power to Succeed in the Marketplace
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

Rabbi Greenglass would tell the following story about a student of the Baal Shem Tov named Kopel. His name was Kopel, but for the people in the region he was known as Kopel Shavisi. They liked to call him Kopel Shavisi because of their impression of him, especially the way he behaved in the marketplace. This is because Kopel was in charge of the weights and measures for all purchases in the market. Kopel was the only one that everyone trusted to be the most meticulous, fair and honest to both sides Jew and non-Jew alike. As he concluded each transaction he would exclaim “shavisi!” meaning that the weight was equal and the transaction was legitimate. Why did he use the word shavisi? Because it reminded him that he is standing constantly in Hashem’s presence (Shavisi Hashem l’negdi tamid- I place Hashem before me constantly). They all respected and trusted Kopel because his honesty and his connection to Hashem were palpable in all that he did.

One day, for some reason Kopel Shavisi didn’t make it to the marketplace. Immediately the marketplace was thrown into turmoil and came to a grinding halt. How could they possibly do their business without Kopel Shavisi? It was unanimously decided to cancel the market that day. Without Kopel they simply couldn’t be certain that the purchases would be fair and correct.

When the Baal Shem Tov heard this story he said that this teaches us a lesson in Avodas Hashem. Without shavisi (as in the pasuk; Shavisi Hashem l’negdi tamid) a neshama cannot do it’s business in this world.

Chassidus teaches us that every one of us has a neshama, a G-dly soul that is a chelek Elokai mama’al mamash.  Although there may not be a Shavisi sign or a Da Lifnei Atah Omed sign by the shtender in shul to remind us constantly of Hashem being in front of us, because we have a neshama and we learn chassidus we get the strength to keep Hashem forefront in our thoughts as we go through the day.

One the 12 pasukim says; “Henei Hashem nitav ailav- Behold Hashem stands upon him”. If the fact that Hashem is standing next to us and giving us strength is carved in our minds, then we are able to accomplish. If we ever loose sight of this we know that that it’s a sign that we have to learn more chassidus. Learning chassidus prevents us from driving off the spiritual cliff of forgetfulness. As we go through the day we should always be asking ourselves; is this thing I am doing what Hashem wants me to be doing right now? If we think of deciding by what’s most comfortable, natural or convenient we can be certain we have veered off the path. We need to go back to Sichos and Maamarim to regain our footing.

This was also a central message we took from the Yom Tov of Shavuos. When we look into our lives we ask ourselves about our approach. Is our approach first naaseh, we will do and then nishma, we will understand or is it the opposite. When we take a look around us at what is happening today, we don’t need to look far to see that without focus it’s a slippery slope. Through accepting the Torah in a way of naaseh v’nishma, every Jew fulfills his purpose and keeps his focus. The strength we get comes from learning chassidus. If we keep the shavisi, then we can accomplish.

This week’s parsha speaks about the meraglim. It’s hard for us to understand what went wrong, Moshe picked them, how could he have seemingly made such a big mistake? The meraglim forgot that they were shluchim of Moshe. Moshe is the Rebbe and together they have the power to conquer the land. When there is no shavisi, when we forget that we are shluchim of Moshe and in front of Hashem, then we think that it’s better to stay in the desert surrounded protected by the ananei hakavod closed off from the world. At least there in the desert Moshe Rabbenu can teach us the Torah. When there’s no shavisi then we think that Moshe Rabbenu does not understand the challenges of the outside world. We feel that we can't be frum and live in the land without getting swallowed up by the giants. It was at this moment in the midst of the challenge that Calev made a trip to the Ohel of the Avos and begged and said that he wanted to be connected to Moshe Rabbenu. He did not forget shavisi. He remained firm.

The lesson for each one of us is that if we remember shavisi and stay connected to Moshe Rabbenu then we can bring Moshiach. The 15th of Sivan is the day that the Previous Rebbe was arrested. The Stalinists where strong but the Rebbe, one man, stood up against all of them.  He also demanded the same from his Chassidim. He was just as Moshe Rabbenu was, not afraid of the giant, Og.

If we feel that the world is too strong to stand up to, then learn chassidus. Connect with Moshe Rabbenu the Rebbe. Go to the Ohel and daven like Calev and you will see that you have the kochos to do it; it's work but it can be done. In words of Calev and Yehoshua: “Olah naela- we will surely go up” and conquer Eretz Yisroel.

Moshe gave each one of us the echod of שמע ישראל... With the echod we can be strong. This is what Moshe reveals in every Jew. If we forget then we say that it’s impossible to do our shlichus. We need to get back to the shavisi.

The Rebbe strengthens our emunah in Hashem. Everyone can tap into it. We don’t need to say that we did not see the Rebbe and therefore we can’t do it. The Rebbe is giving us the strength now just as before, it’s up to us to tap into it by learning chassidus. This will help us reveal the emunah and bitachon in Hashem that we have and give us the strength necessary to overcome all obstacles and reveal Moshiach now.
