Non-Religious Child at the Seder

Living Torah video: Even when his child is less than “wise,” a father must never give up on him. One must educate all of his children, and see to it that all four sons come to the Seder table.

Last week's Living Torah brought us a touching clip of the Rebbe emphasizing the importance of ensuring that everyone has a Seder to attend. In this week's video, the Rebbe explains the importance of this Mivtzah and what lessons we can learn from the Haggadah.

The Haggadah relates that “Torah speaks to four sons”. Although they are all different they are placed one beside the other to emphasize the innate value of each.

Even when his child is less than “wise,” a father must never give up on him. One must educate all of his children, and see to it that all four sons come to the table.

This goes beyond one’s own children. We must collectively ensure that every Jew has a place to call home on Passover, and by extension throughout the year.

Dear Fellow Chassidim,

We all know how dear it is to the Rebbe that every single yid be present at a Seder. All the sichos about the fifth child....,

Be'ezras HASHEM this year, CLY, in conjunction with Chabad of Hancock Park, Chabad of Melrose, Aleph Institute and Chabad of Larchmont will be hosting a seder in Shul for ANY yid who needs a place.

While there is a suggested donation of 36/per person, it is just that: a suggested amount, which many are not paying.

In honor of Yud Aleph Nissan, please reach out to neighbors, business associates, yidden you've once met and encourage them to join! Please send them to our link jewishhp.com/seder or ask them to call 323-886-0770 or email [email protected]

The cost for the meal, matzah and wine and other supplies (including renting fridges etc), totals approx 36 per Person per night. Devar Torah - Metzora

Performing our Part in the Redemption
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

The Jewish people left Mitzrayim in the springtime, in Chodesh Aviv; therefore we celebrate Pesach in Chodesh Aviv. For this purpose our calendar has leap years to assure that Pesach always falls during the springtime. It was a great kindness from Hashem to take us out at a time that was neither too hot nor too cold. Springtime, Chodesh Aviv also teaches us a lesson on a deeper level. The Jewish people suffered in Mitzrayim for 210 years under the superpower of the time. Surrounded on all sides by an army of chariots and riders, no one escaped their power. Aside from their great wealth they were academically and culturally dominant. They had a distinct worldview and philosophy. Through their use of irrigation they converted a land without rain into a thriving and abundant agriculture and economy, as the verse says; “K’Gan Hashem, k’Eretz Mitzrayim, Like a garden of Hashem like the land of Mitzrayim”.

Their philosophy and approach was founded on revolved around their perception of nature. Their goal was to exploit nature to it’s utmost to create completeness through might. The exploitation of natural cause and using it for whatever they desired was the cause of our enslavement. They forgot about Hashem the One who causes nature to work and for all things to blossom. This is represented in the spring when we see the rebirth of nature. In the midst of all this Hashem commanded the Jewish People to take a lamb, the idol of Mitzrayim and slaughter it in public!  The time of our redemption had arrived and Moshe Rabbenu informed the people that after 210 years of slavery Hashem wanted to redeem them. Many were in a state of despair. They felt completely dominated and were convinced that there was no way to escape. Nevertheless, against all odds, Moshe Rabbenu strengthened them to believe that they would indeed be redeemed, but in order to get out they had to do something, they had perform a part in the redemption. “Mishchu u’kchu lachem tzon”; Pull away from idolatry, come to yourself (literally: get a hold of yourself) and take a lamb and slaughter it for Hashem (a mitzvah). It’s not enough to do this in your heart or in your house; it must be provocative, in broad daylight in front of everyone. Then, promised Moshe Rabbenu that not only would we be redeemed but also Pharaoh himself would send us out.

Pesach represents the unity and the inter-inclusion of the supernatural and the natural. Both are one expression of the one and only Hashem. Our relation with Hashem in both aspects is reflected in the culmination of the exodus on Har Sinai with the two commandments of Anochi and Lo’Yehye Lecha: that Hashem is the one and only power, there is no other and we serve Him in all aspects.

Nowadays we also live in an updated version of Mitzrayim, a culture whose philosophy are theories based solely on nature. Many proclaim in the name of science to have all the answers and to have the ability to have control nature and exploit it to fit whatever desire dictates. They claim to know how to define all things and condone all types of behavior. Just as Mitzrayim passed, this too this shall pass. It’s is a great thing to use the natural world for the sake of humanity. It should not and does not come at the expense of realizing that nature itself is a gift from Hashem. Once again the Jew is caught in the cross hairs and some people despair of a way out of today’s culture’s eventual total domination over our destiny and our purpose. This is the lesson of the springtime and of Pesach. The time of our redemption has arrived. We need to do our part. It’s time to pull our hands away from the idolatry, of today’s superpower its culture, its philosophy and its idolization of nature. It’s time to get a hold of ourselves. Instead we offer it as a sacrifice, a part of our service of Hashem by acknowledging Hashem’s power in everything this spring, by doing the mitzvos of Pesach and enjoying the Seder together.

By celebrating Pesach this year, a year of Hakel, together with our families and communities, men women and children may we merit to celebrate Pesach together with Moshiach.

A Good Shabbos; A Kosher and Freilichin Pesach!

Devar Torah - Tazria

The Paradox of Change
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

This week is parshas Tazriah, pashas HaChodesh and Rosh Chodesh. It’s a very special Shabbos. We do not read from three Sifrei Torah on any other time throughout the entire year as we do this week with the exception of Simchas Torah and occasionally on Shabbos Chanukah.

Rosh Hashanah begins in Tishrei yet we are told in parshas HaChodesh that Nissan is the first of the months of the year. So which month is the first and what lesson does it teach us in our service of Hashem?

The word for a year, shana, means to repeat. This is reflected in the non-changing repetitiveness of the solar calendar. The solar calendar is 365 days a year, year in year out. It doesn’t fluctuate. Each day the sun rises and then sets and then repeats itself. The word for a month, chodesh, means new (chadash), which is the opposite of repetition; it represents change. This is reflected in the lunar cycle. The moon appears anew as if reborn every month. It increases in strength and visibility until after the 15th of the month when wanes only to be renewed and reborn yet again.

Rosh Hashana is in Tishrei, the time of the creation and of nature. This is represented in the solar calendar, which just like nature itself is non-changing. Nissan is a time of miracles and wonders such as the miracles of yetzias Mitzrayim. Pesach, always celebrated in Nissan and in the spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. Therefore Nissan is the beginning of the chodashim, the months, the lunar cycle.

From our perspective we see Tishrei and Nissan, the solar and the lunar as two separate cycles or as differing frequencies (as in radio waves). On one frequency we experience the power of Hashem in miracles and on the other the power of Hashem in nature. In truth they are one and the same. They both reveal the power of the one and only Hashem, which is infinite and unlimited and within everything, including the limited laws of nature.

When we observe this great creation that we live within and then reflect on the infinite power behind everything that keeps it all alive and functioning in all it’s strength, never changing or waning, we experience Hashem’s infinite power from the vantage point of nature. Once a doctor, the head of the department of neonatal care told me that every time a child is born healthy, it’s a miracle. When we remember and relive the miracles of Pesach we see the power of Hashem in miracles that transcend, suspend and break nature. The miracles of Purim are miracles that do not break nature but work through nature. No matter what frequency we tune into or from which angle we prefer to perceive, both reveal the power and goodness of the one and only Hashem.

These two perspectives can also been seen in our daily lives in the way we connect in our service of Hashem. We incorporate the miraculous in our service of Hashem through kabbolas ohl accepting Hashem and the Torah and mitzvos as the centerpiece of lives. Also, when we have mesirus nefesh, sacrifice and bitul, which is being awake and active in all aspects of the service of Hashem, we break out of our limitations and we serve Hashem in a miraculous way. When we learn and understand and then feel with our natural senses and talents and then incorporate what we learn and feel into our personal lives we serve Hashem though nature. They are two separate services. In Russia, mesirus nefesh was in the forefront. In America it’s on a back burner and intellect and understanding is in the forefront. They are two discreet frequencies that make up one service but ultimately they are one and the same. Every one of us can say that I was created to serve Hashem, the one Hashem that is in nature and beyond nature. Our job is to infuse what is beyond nature into nature, to bring the Shabbos into the week and the sense of miracles into daily routine. Through our service in both areas and uniting both as one may we merit the ultimate miracle, the revelation of Mashiach in the most revealed, practical and tangible way.
