Taking a Stand for True Compassion
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
Throughout this week’s parsha of Vayeira we live each day with Avraham Avinu. We learned about Avraham Avinu’s care and compassion for others when he prayed to save Sedom. At the very beginning of our parsha we see that he was tired and weak after getting a circumcision nevertheless he reached out to others providing by the needs of wayfarers. Not only was this a great physical sacrifice but he was even willing to forgo an encounter with the Shechina, the greatest possible spiritual sacrifice to attend to his guests. From this story we learn that hachnasas orchim is even greater then kabolas pnei Shechina, from receiving Hashem’s divine countenance.
The behavior of Avraham Avinu and the lesson he provides us has defined Jewish kindness and compassion throughout the centuries. According to the Torah there is an essential difference between compassion based on belief in Hashem and regular human compassion. The difference is profound in both quantity and quality and it can even produce opposite results.
Where did Avraham Avinu’s motivation come from? During his entreaty on behalf of the people of Sedom he said: “Here I venture to speak to my G-d, I who am but dust and ashes”. Rashi comments: “I would long ago have been reduced to dust by the kings and to ashes by Nimrod had it not been that Thy mercies stood by me”. It was because of Avraham Avinu’s great humility that he was able to see goodness and potential in others. His ultimate goal, which was both hard won time tested and true through his many challenges, was to receive the glory of Hashem. His deepest desire and commitment was to actualize the will of Hashem, not in any way for his personal gain, the Creator which he came to know through his searching, reflection, and service. This too is the responsibility of every Jew who follows in his ways. We strive that what we do be according to Hashem's will, not our personal desires. When we live fulfilling Hashem's will we have the nachas of knowing it was done properly. When we have that motivation all of the care and compassion that we do has the ring of truth and turns out well.
Today we live in a G-dless society. A new form of compassion has become the norm. Especially in democratic societies, as well intentioned as it might be, there are certain actions that are stated as caring and compassionate but end in terrible harm. The core reason is because it’s missing what motivated Avraham Avinu. Instead of every act of compassion bonding us together to Hashem and His will, all too often acts of compassion are in truth assertions of personal desires comforts and feelings. In today’s world it’s what’s right for me, not necessarily what’s right in general. Take for example the issue of abortion. Once there is a viable fetus there is a life inhabiting the womb of the mother. She has a choice. On one hand she could say that until now she didn’t want to have a child but that now there is a life, something outside of her, within her. Her morals ethics and beliefs tell her that that life is good and has rights that she must respect notwithstanding it being unexpected, inconvenient and life changing. On the other hand, in today’s world she has another option which society approves and encourages! She can say that she doesn’t care. It’s my body and it’s my life and I prefer to abort (kill the child). Without an awareness of a loving and compassionate Creator, when life is about what’s best for me, she may, as millions have choose abortion. She may even choose partial birth abortion! That means that the child is alive full term and about to be born but only 6 inches of the head remains inside. At that point they the murder the child. In our society that we live today people think that’s okay. They even feel compassionate. There are rare cases where it is necessary to save the mother's life. For the vast majority that is not the reason. Its a civil rights issue; to protect the rights of the woman over the life of the child. How can you kill another life, it’s cruel and it’s murder? No answer, it’s about the woman’s rights. Video clips were published of representatives of abortion clinics drinking coffee and laughing as they sold the body parts of the aborted fetuses. At the same time these same people will fight tooth and nail against waterboarding terrorists and fight for the rights of wild animals! Something is seriously amiss. It starts with the example of Avraham Avinu and his ways of kindness and compassion. Through his example he showed us how to bring out the positive and how to love others, even those we don’t know and those that we disagree with. He taught us how to protect Hashem’s world.
When we look around we see how we have been lectured for the last 20 years and beyond about compassion and tolerance. There are many in the media and in the culture who point to the religious and define them as intolerant and lacking compassion for others. When we look into the streets and listen to the messages of the demonstrators we see a lack of compassion and great intolerance. When we look at the policies they put forth we see a lack of compassion toward the unborn child and to those in need of protections against terrorism and safety on our streets.
Because we are blessed to follow in the ways of Avraham Avinu and all our forefathers prophets teachers and Rabbeim, no matter what the odds are we have the opportunity to show that difference. Its our obligation to teach everyone the way of Hashem. Ultimately the truth will come to light we will merit see return of the Shechina to Tzion where we will all serve Hashem together as one community with the coming of Moshiach Now

"Keep on Trucking!'
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
In this week's parsha of Lech Lecha Hashem tells Avraham Avinu to leave Haran. Throughout the narrative of the parsha we see Avraham enduring many tests. In a similar vein we face many tests in our lives especially after we complete the cycle of the Yomim Tovim of Tishrei. As the month of Cheshvan sets in, a month without a Yom Tov, often a time when the skies become cloudy and the cold returns, we can begin to feel a certain melancholy appear on our horizons. We may feel sad about the things we should have but as of yet have not accomplished. We also might be down about about a physical or spiritual part of our lives that is not going the way we perceive that it should. Before we know it we've made an appointment with our therapist to work it through.
As chassidim we should ask ourselves what view the Rebbe's would have on this situation. When we take out the Rebbe's Igros Kodesh we will find different letters where the Rebbe discusses this topic.
The Rebbe often refers to perek 26 of the Tanya in which the Alter Rebbe says that the source of all sadness comes from the yetzer hara. He says that we are involved in a constant struggle to overcome the tactics of the yetzer hara. In order to be successful it is of utmost and critical importance not to be weak, complacent, lazy or to give up. If we fall prey, chas v'Shalom to this kind of thinking, we would loose our strength. Therefore our first and foremost responsibility is to avoid any sadness or resignation.
In volume 20 page 323 of Igros Kodesh the Rebbe descibes how to stay far from any type of sadness. He says that when we start our day with Birchas HaShachar and even before with Modei Ani, by simply remembering what the prayer means we will be brought to the greatest joy. (Meaning; that if we realize that Hashem has created us, placed within us our neshama, taken care of all of our needs, and that it is Hashem NOT US that is truly in control how could we or how would we ever think anything but happy thoughts?)
In a different letter in volume 6 page 246 the Rebbe wrote to an individual who was struggling with what he described as his lowly spiritual level. First the Rebbe tells him how lucky every Jew is to have; "ner mitzvah vTorah ohr- the candle of mitzvos and the light of the Torah" and that this awareness should be a source of joy in life. Then, addressing his inquiry directly, he asks him how he can be certain that his self evaluation is accurate and not instead an exaggerated and unrealistic imagination of his true circumstances.
The Rebbe continues to say that even if there is truth in his assessment, he should compare two possibilities. If a person was unaware of the fact that he was not well, without realizing it he would act in ways harmful to his health or not seek a cure to get better. This would continue until Hashem, who works 'behind the scenes' and orchestrates circumstances beyond the persons control will ultimately bring the situation to this person's attention. So now that he's assessed his situation he has hope to move in a positive direction, to do things that will cure him and be sure to stay away from further harm. In such a situation he should be happy, not sad, as he is well on the way to good health.
From these letters from Igros Kodesh we can learn to apply the Rebbe's approach to most of our daily challenges. First we need to begin with Modei Ani, to be aware and grateful that Hashem has created us, placed within us our neshama, taken care of all of our needs, and that He is in control and everything that is happenning is b'Hashgacha Protis. Then, if i still feel guilty or sad because of some poor choices i have made, then i first need to check that i haven't unwittingly blown things out of proportion because of my lack of objectivity. If after speaking to a mashpiah, [or in cases of physical ailments or business issues etc., a doctor or lawyer etc.] my concerns are confirmed as real, it is necessary to create a plan of action to correct the situation. This also includes regular review and updating of the plan. Then i need to rejoice over the fact that its been caught a day earlier and not a day later. I can now avoid living in the dark and continue forward in the path of Hashem.
May we merit the compleat refua with the coming of moshiach now!

Turning Mirrors into Windows of Opportunity
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
The Hayom Yom for the 9th of Iyar states: “Our teacher the Baal Shem Tov said: Every single thing one sees or hears is an instruction for his conduct in the service of G‑d. This is the idea of avoda, service, to comprehend and discern in all things a way in which to serve G‑d.”
In a Sicha (Likutei Sichos v. 10) the Rebbe teaches what one should do when he sees a negative trait in another person. From the above mentioned Hayom Yom the Rebbe mentioned another teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that seeing a negative trait in someone else is also a sign to examine one’s own behavior. Aside needing to see it in order to help others, many times it’s a mirror for ourselves.
Last week we saw an example of this during the Senate confirmation hearings for the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to serve in the Supreme Court. The very fact that the whole event was held in such a circus-like atmosphere with so much public excitement and passion on all sides in and of itself tells us that there a vital lesson in the service of Hashem. A centerpiece of public attention in these hearings was the testimony of an individual who accused Brett Kavanaugh of criminal misconduct in his teenage years. According to the Torah a case cannot be brought before the Bais Din unless there are witnesses or credible evidence. On the contrary if someone accuses another person without evidence or witnesses it is considered worse than gossip, it falls under the transgression of making a bad name for someone else.
The very fact that this accusation is related to an alleged event that occurred over 35 years ago teaches a lesson that everything we do has a ripple effect. Nothing is lost and everything we do has lasting impact even 35 years later. All the more so for good things.
How fortunate we are that we have been given the opportunity to do teshuva and to correct past misdeeds. There is no such thing as being a lost cause no matter how much time has passed. We have teshuva and Yom Kippur a day of atonement and to make things right. How happy we are to have a Creator with infinite kindness that grants forgiveness so much so that if we change nothing is mentioned on the day of judgement. It is completely wiped off the record as if it never occurred.
In another Sicha (Shabbos Teshuva parshas Vayelech 5719) the Rebbe quotes the sefer Minhagei Maharil. The Gemara (Shabbos 153.) says in the name of R’ Eliezer to do teshuva one day before one’s passing. The students of R’ Eliezer asked which day is that, being that a person doesn’t know the day of their passing, how then will they know which day is the day before? R’ Eliezer answered; that makes it all the more important to do teshuva today because he doesn't know if tomorrow he will pass; and in that way he will spend his entire life doing teshuva.
The Maharil brings a different approach and reason for spending one's entire life doing teshuva. This other reason is because in the days of the Moshiach no one will be being accepted to do teshuva. The time for teshuva will be over. This is similar to not receiving converts in the days of Moshiach. The reason converts will not be accepted is because conversion must be an authentic act made out of love for Hashem. When Moshiach arrives everyone will want to convert in order to join in the celebration of the Jewish people.
Since we are waiting and anticipating the arrival of Moshiach everyday, if someone doesn't do teshuva today and then Moshiach arrives, the opportunity will be forever lost and he or she will be left together with their sins. Therefore today we still have the opportunity to do to complete teshuva as soon as possible.
The Rebbe said that this reasoning of the Maharil, different than the Gemara, is a very pleasant word. Why do we need to speak about having to do teshuva because they're afraid that it might be their last day of life? It's much more pleasant to grab the opportunity to do a real teshuva with the hope that Moshiach is coming by tomorrow (at the latest) and today is the last our last opportunity.
In a Maamar (5701 page 41) the Previous Rebbe mentions that after the neshama goes through various punishments and lifetimes to cleanse itself from choosing folly over fulfilling its purpose in this world of elevating sparks, and bringing the flow of blessings from on high into the world; eventually the neshama fulfills its purpose.
The Rebbe then goes on to explain our request during davening (Birchas Krias Shema): “May we never be embarrassed, and may we never be disgraced, and may we never stumble forever.”
“May we never be embarrassed” refers to embarrassment in this world, because in this world we do not know what is in the heart of our friend and we need to look only at his or her good, but we do know what is in our own heart, and for that we are embarrassed.
“May we never be disgraced” refers to the World to Come because there it is the world of truth and everything is explicitly and inherently known. If we don’t do teshuva in this world (Hayom La’asosam) there is no opportunity offered there for teshuva. This is why we are disgraced there, because there is where we face public and known embarrassment, which is itself one of the greatest possible punishments.
Which brings us to the last phrase of our heartfelt request; “And may we never stumble forever” refers to Techias Hameisim when all the bodies destined will arise according to the laws of the Torah. At that time there will be a judgement. This is the stumbling after the embarrassment in this world and the disgrace in the World to Come. For all of this we pray that Hashem should put within our hearts the motivation to do teshuva now and therefore avoid embarrassment, disgrace and stumbling. On the contrary, we pray to fulfill the true intention for our neshama’s descent into our bodies in this world which is to learn the Torah and do mitzvos thereby fulfilling Hashem’s desire of making this world into a dwelling place for Hashem.
With our primary focus being on the coming of Moshiach immediately we learn from the events of this world to teach us lessons to do teshuva with inspiration and simcha and make the most fitting preparation possible for Moshiach.
