What I learned about Elul
from the Rebbe’s Fabrengen that I didn’t Attend
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
The Chosid Rav Mordecai Perlow learned in Lubavitch and his teacher and mashpia was Rav Michoel der Alter. There was a story with a lesson that Rav Michoel would often tell over at his fabrengens with the bachurim. Rav Mordecai wrote the story and submitted to the Rebbe when he heard that the Rebbe asked that Chassidim should write stories and submit them. One year on a Yud Shevat the Rebbe told over the story.
At that time the many small villages often didn’t have enough children to support an entire cheder so sometimes several villages would combine and hire an experienced melamed. The melamed was literate while often the villagers were not. When villagers would receive mail that they could not read, they would bring it to the melamed to read out loud. One day the melamed read out loud a letter to a villager that said that his father had passed away. The villager, when hearing this immediately passed out. Rav Michoel would ask why the teacher didn’t faint, after all he was the one who read the letter and understood the words best. The common answer was that he didn’t faint because it wasn’t his father. Rav Michoel then explained the meaning of the story saying that this is the point of Chassidus and what it means to be a Chosid. If we don't recognize that when we speak about Hashem that it’s Avinu, that Hashem is our father, then we missed the entire point. When we learn Chassidus and then apply it to our personal life then we come to realize that Hashem is our Father.
This story is applicable to the Rebbe’s Sichos and Maamarim. Some feel that since they weren't there at the fabrengen, or since they never met the Rebbe because they were born after Gimmel Tammuz then it's not relevant to them. When we relate to these teachings as theoretical and they are not applied to our personal lives they don't have the proper effect.
Elul is when we look over the past year at what we have accomplished with our time and what we should do going forward. In the maamar “Lo t’hei mashakela” from 5712-1952 the Rebbe brings the Gemara from Brachos about Rebbe Yochanan ben Zakai. Rebbe Yochanan ben Zakai was crying at the end of his life because he said that there were two possible roads, one to Gan Eden and the other the opposite and he didn't know upon which he was going. Rebbe Yochanan ben Zakai learned the Torah for 40 years, taught the Torah for 40 years and was the leader of Klal Yisroel for 40 years (He lived 120 years). Why was he unsure on which road he was going and why did he cry? The Rebbe explains that throughout his entire life was so fully engrossed in his service of Hashem that he didn't stop long enough to look at himself and figure out if everything he was doing was exactly correct.
When we are born there is a timestamp placed in our passport. We are given a specific number of minutes to fulfill our specific purpose in bringing Hashem Echod into this world. Rebbe Yochanan ben Zakai had no time to reflect on himself because our entire lives should be filled with our specific purpose of bringing Hashem Echod into this world. If we will stop and divert the precious time we have to think about ourselves then we will use up the necessary time to accomplish our specific mission. At the end of his life however it was time to make an account and therefore he cried.
When the Rebbe said over this part of the Maamar he became emotional and cried. It was similar to the anguish of Rebbe Yochanan ben Zakai mentioned in the Gemara.
As Chassidim we try to take the Rebbe’s Sichos and Maamarin to heart and try to apply them to ourselves and our personal lives even though we were not at the fabrengen where the Sicha or the Maamar was delivered. When I relive in my mind the story Rebbe Yochanan ben Zakai, the way the Rebbe cried and what it means to me it shakes me up and I begin to think about how to better use my time and what to focus on. There's no time to waste and not one minute will come back to fulfill the purpose of our lives. The myriad of distractions from iPhones to iPads to social media need to brought under our control and redirected towards learning Sichos and Maamarim and taking them to heart and into our daily lives.
Elul reminds us to take our time seriously, take stock and improve and utilize our time in the service of Hashem, and greet Avinu Malkeinu, our Father and our King on Rosh Hashana with renewed vitality with the geula now.
To be continued.

Devar Torah - V’Eschanan
The Gemorah at the end of Taanis states that Tu b'Av and Yom HaKippurim are the most joyous Yomim Tovim for the Jewish people.
The Gemorah lists the following reasons:
1. The Jewish People stopped dying in the Midbar. Tosfos explains that every year at Tisha b'Av, an announcement was made that each person should dig a grave and then to sleep in it that night. Those who did not rise the next morning were buried in their grave. Those who rose from their grave merited at least another year of life. The final year in the Midbar on Tisha b'Av, every person rose from their grave, not even one had died. Because they thought that perhaps they had erred in their calculation of the date, they decided to sleep in their graves for the next four nights. Finally, when the full moon arrived they realized that the decree had been nullified, that they would all live. This was the first year the Jewish People celebrated Tu b'Av.
2. The Romans permitted burial to the the Jews of Betar. The Jews that were killed during the rebellion of Barto that led to the destruction of Betar on Tisha b’Av, were allowed burial on the day of Tu b’Av. This event brought closure to the destruction of the city. At that time, the Sanhedrin added a fourth bracha to Birchas Hamazon, “HaTov VeHameitiv”. This was instituted to express gratitude toward Hashem for these Jews being brought to burial, and that their corpses had not decayed all the years that they had remained unburied.
3. Intertribal marriages were allowed. Moshe had decreed that women should only marry within their own tribe. This was to avoid the transfer of ownership from the original tribal portions given during the initial division of the land. This decree began when the uncles of the daughters of Tzlofchad complained after Hashem told Moshe to give the daughters of Tzlofchad the portion of their father in Eretz Yisroel. Their complaint was that if the daughters would wed someone from another shevet that land would be transferred away from the tribe of Menashe to the tribe of whomever they married. This practice was followed for many years. On Tu b'Av the Sanhedrin in Eretz Yisroel permitted marriages between men and women of any shevet. It was understood that the original prohibition was only intended for the generation entering Eretz Yisroel.
4. King Hoshea permitted the pilgrimage of Jews to Yerushalayim. Earlier, Yeravam had made a blockade to keep the tribes of the north from going to Yerushayim for the Shalosh Regalim. He feared that going to Yerushalayim might lead to rebellion against him and joining the Kingdom of Yehudah under the leadership of Rechavam, the son of Shlomo Hamelech. King Hoshea removed the blockade allowing the Jews of the north to travel up to Yerushalayim for Yom Tov.
5. The completion of wood cutting for the mizbeach. The fires that burned on the mizbeach required wood that did not have worm infestation. The kohanim checked each piece to see if it was fit for use. The cutting of wood for the mizbeach ended each year on the fifteenth day of Av because the sun begins to lose its summer intensity. Therefore the wood after that time does not thoroughly dry allowing for worm infestation.
6. Shevet Binyomin was re allowed to marry with other shevotim. The other Shevotim had previously made an oath stating that their daughters would not marry into Shevet Binyomin. This occurred in the aftermath of a large war waged against Shevet Binyomin by the other Shevatim as is explained in Sefer Shoftim. On Tu b’Av permission was given that girls would be able to marry into the tribe of Binyamin. This saved Shevet Binyomin from extinction. As a result, the achdus and ahavas Yisroel among the shevotim was strengthened.
7. Many shidduchim were made on this day when the young women would go and dance in the vineyards on Tu b’Av. These young women would borrow someone else’s dress to go to the fields on Tu b’Av. No one used her own dress. The purpose of this custom of borrowing was to prevent any of the women feeling shame if she did not have her own clothing. The Gemorah explains that the daughter of the king would borrow from the daughter of the Kohen Gadol who in turn would borrow from the daughter of the deputy Kohen Gadol. All of this was instituted so that a poor girl who had no nice garment of her own would be able to borrow a dress to go out on a date without embarrassment.
The Rebbe explains that the greatness of Tu b’Av is in how it represents nullification of Tisha b’Av. From the first point we see how Tu b’Av revealed that Tisha b’Av is no longer a day of mourning. The Jews of the Midbar realized that the decree of Tisha b’Av was annulled. Not that they stopped dying altogether, but that it revealed to them that the decree of Tisha B’Av is no longer in effect.
The fact that men and women of any shevet were permitted to marry and that Shevet Binyomin was fully included among Bnei Yisroel both demonstrate unity. King Hoshea as well brought unity where there had been division for hundreds of years between the Kingdoms of Judah and Israel.
With regard to wood for the mizbeach we know that the woodcutters would work in the heat of summer cutting wood. They did not know who, in the end would use the wood they cut or what sort of korban it would burn. The person who brought it to the Chamber of Wood did not know who would use it as the one for whom it was used did not know who brought it. This represents the highest level of tzedakah. Additionally, the sun became weaker. This represents the solar calendar which is in use by non-Jews. The weakening of the sun after Tu b'Av represents the weakening of the goyim (see HaYom Yom on 15 Av).
The second Bais Hamikdosh was destroyed because of sinas chinam. Tu b’Av is the cure. Tu b’Av shows ahavas Yisroel and achdus Yisroel; that in truth there is no division between one Jew and another.
The daughter of the king might have said that she would give ten dresses to tzedekah for the daughters of the poor. This was not the practice. Each girl had to wear someone else’s dress and feel uncomfortable. This was for the sake of another Jewish girl, one she probably never met, never went to school with, and who was poor, that she should not be ashamed to knock on someone’s door to borrow a dress. To have discomfort just so another Jew not be ashamed is the highest level of tzedakah. This is true ahavas and achdus Yisroel.

Shabbos Chazon is the Time to Convert Golus to Geula
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
Traditionally in Jewish communities worldwide Shabbos Chazon is viewed and practiced as a time of distress and sadness. Shabbos Chazon is always the Shabbos that falls within the Nine Days, day’s of mourning over the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. When Tisha B’Av falls out on a Shabbos the actual day of the destruction, then it is particularly vexing. There are special customs observed and special clothing that is traditionally worn to reflect the solemn mood and there is even a sad melody that is sung for the prayer of Lecha Dodi.
The Rebbe explains how Chassidus views these days in general especially the Shabbos in particular very differently. Since Halacha forbids mourning on the Shabbos, we view it as above the Three Weeks entirely. Actually, the Shabbosim that fall out during the Three Weeks are their antidote, they give us the strength to counteract and eventually overturn the cause of mourning during the Three Weeks.
Rav Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev said that Hashem shows every Jew on the level of their neshama the 3rd Beis HaMikdash on Shabbos Chazon. The Third Beis HaMikdash is already built and waiting for us to do our part to allow it to descend. Rav Levi Yitzchok analogized this with a parable of a father who sewed a beautiful garment and gave it to his beloved son. The son, not realizing its value wasn’t careful and soon ripped the garment. The father sewed him a second garment and the again the son ripped the garment. The father then sewed a third garment for his son but did not give it to him. Instead he just showed it to him from time to time and reminded him that when he will learn to take care of it, this is what he will get. So too on Shabbos Chazon; Hashem shows us the 3rd Beis HaMikdash, and reminds us that when we will change and do teshuva this is what we will receive. If a person will ask; I don’t see? There is a part of the neshama that does see that gets strength and pushes us to do our part.
Therefore the Rebbe teaches us that the message of Shabbos Chazon is positive. This is especially true when Tisha B’Av falls on Shabbos when the day of Tisha B’Av is left with only it’s positive parts. Because it’s Shabbos, which is above and beyond mourning there is no fasting or open mourning (see the Chabad Chodesh for details). What is left of the day? It’s the birthday of Moshiach! We see this clearly in the way the Rebbe kept this day. He had a fabrengen where he stressed geula and Moshiach and all of the positive potential we have to convert darkness to light and mourning to celebration.
A Good Shabbos!

What Does It Mean to Live
as a Lubavitcher Chosid in 2019?
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
To be frank I feel torn. We are living in difficult times. It’s 25 years since Gimmel Tammuz. There is an entire generation of Lubavitchers who never saw the Rebbe. Parnasa is difficult for many. For some shalom bayis is a challenge. Others are stretched from raising a family, while for a few it seems that all of these things are problematic. Are people even getting the guidance, support and resources they truly deserve so that we ask for yet more, and even higher standards than ever before? The types challenges we have seen as of late are such that I never thought in my adult life I would be called upon to address.
So where do we begin? We know that Hashem gave the Torah to us, not to angels but neshamos in gufim, people of flesh and blood, with a yetzer hara. This week’s parsha Matos-Massai discusses vows. Why do we take a vow? And why do we go to a chacham to release us from a vow? The Rebbe explains that a person takes a vow when they become fearful if have the strength to not abuse the permissible. Abuse of the permissible leads to falling into the forbidden. In an effort to avoid a tragedy a vow is taken from the permissible thereby creating a safeguard, a protection to avoid a devastating downward spiral.
When a chacham releases the vow it’s for one of two reasons. One is because the person who took the vow underestimated their abilities. The chacham can see that they really are able to rise above their challenges. By releasing the vow he gives the necessary vote of confidence to the one who takes the vow. Another reason is that the Torah is giving the chacham the power to release the vow thereby infusing the person with the strength to overcome their challenge and utilize the physical to serve Hashem.
When are the parshios of Matos and Massei read together? When parshas Pinchas is the first parsha of the Three Weeks. This shows that there is a special connection between Pinchas, Matos and Massei. The Rebbe explains that the name of the parsha encapsulates its theme. A matah is a tribe just like the word shevet. Chassidus connects this meaning with yet another meaning for these words. A shevet is a live twig connected to the branch, while a matah is a disconnected dried up stick. The matah represents the galus Jew, without moisture while a shevet represents the Jew in the times of the Mikdash connected to Hashem full of life and vigor. The advantage of the stick is, that although he may be dried up, nevertheless he is “stiff necked”, he is unwavering and unbending in the service of Hashem.
Massei represents our journey from the limitations of Mitzrayim, any limitation in the service of Hashem, into and through the work of this world until we reach Yarden Yareicho, until the revelation of Moshiach.
In order to go forward we need to be like a matah, a stick firm and resolved throughout the journey. As the Baal Shem Tov teaches, the 42 journeys in the desert correspond to the challenges of our entire life’s travel. Be it the challenge of not speaking lashon hara like at Rismah, or the lust of Kivros HaTaavah. And even though we do not see the miracles in Egypt, the splitting of the Red Sea and the revelation on Mount Sinai still we are called upon to always persevere until we reach the final destination.
It’s the matah, the strength implanted within the Jew to call upon the firm resolve necessary wherever we are, whoever we are 24/7, to be a Jew connected to Hashem and a chosid of Moshe Rabbenu. We take this inspiration from Pinchas and his mesirus nefesh. We see this mesirus nefesh in the entire life of the Previous Rebbe. The Rebbe Rashab brought the Previous Rebbe into communal responsibilities at the age of 15. He took him to the Ohel of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek and the Rebbe Maharash. Bringing him to the Ohel was similar bringing him to the Akeida, demanding from him that his work from now on will be with mesirus nefesh. The Rebbe Rashab said to the Previous Rebbe that mesirus nefesh means to approach everything: “Azoi un nisht anderesh- This way (Judaism without compromise) and no other way”. When we read about the life of the Previous Rebbe we see that he lived the life of mesirus nefesh through and through, azoi un nisht anderesh. When we emulate this approach we are strong anytime, anywhere, a Jew connected to Hashem and a chosid connected to the Rebbe, even 25 years after Gimmel Tammuz.
Some feel that I am speaking to the choir. We are already chassidim, we keep the minhagim. We are secure. Why do we have to be concerned? The Rebbe once spoke at a fabrengen about why we read about forbidden relations on mincha close to the closing of Yom Kippur. It’s the holiest day of the year. We are fasting, dressed in white and davening the whole day; it’s the furthest thing from the mind. The reason is because that if after Yom Kippur you feel secure that you can just go on your way and you’ll be ok, you are mistaken. If you feel that you do not have to grapple any longer and that you a 100 percent complete, you are mistaken. If you feel that way and are too confident then you spiral out of control into the prohibited. Even after the holiest day of the year, there are no guarantees; we always need Hashem’s help. We always need to strengthen our connection. We have no guarantees that we will not go off course.
Some feel that there are many legitimate heterim, they wonder why must we be so stubborn about mesora, minhagim and chumrahs.
In the early years of Chabad Houses a group of women wanted to have their own women’s minyon with their own ‘chazanit’. The Rav said that there was no problem in halacha. When they wrote the Rebbe, the answer was that surely the Rav was unaware of the fact that this is the way the Reform movement began.
What is so important about not wavering from the mesora of the Rabbeim? Because otherwise we don’t know where we’ll end up. The ways of the Rabbeim are the ways that we guard and keep. It’s hard, where do we get the strength? My father once told me an explanation of the Rav HaMagid on the following gemara. The gemara quotes the pasuk “What does Hashem your G-d ask of you other that to fear Him”. The gemara asks: Is fear a small matter? The gemara answers is yes, relative to Moshe Rabbenu it is a small matter. How does this relate to each of us, we are not Moshe Rabbenu? Because the gemara says “legabi Moshe, which means relative to Moshe it is easy. This means that if we are standing in front Moshe Rabbenu, in his presence, then it’s easy.
So when I go home I shut the door and leave the world behind. I look on the wall and see the picture of the Rebbe facing me. I’m alone with Hashem and the Rebbe. What does this picture mean to me? Is it only that I love the Rebbe and that I am his chosid? How do I look to the Rebbe? Am I comfortable with what the Rebbe sees in me and how I am right now? Am I the chosid he knows that I have the ability to be? Is my home, my dress, my character, and am I living in such a way that I can be in front of the Rebbe? When I get home late at night and stand alone with Hashem and the Rebbe this is what the picture is telling me. Then I have the mateh, the strength to overcome. The Rebbe is asking me to act, to do all that I can to bring Moshiach Now.
