THURSDAY: ARE RAFFLES VALID?

ARE RAFFLES VALID

Mr. Gavriel Fishman died and left over his father, Naftali’s tallis. The tallis belonged to the Kedushas Levi of Bardichov. Mr. Gavriel’s two sons wanted the tallis for themselves. They agree to make a raffle where one would win the tallis and the other $100,000.00. Is this raffle valid?

Rabbi Reuven Yacobi teaches 6th grade. He raffled off seforim, and Chaim Klein had the winning ticket. Later, Chaim did not behave. Rabbi Yacobi wants to take back the rights to the seforim from him. May he do so if he didn’t give Chaim the seforim yet?

Yeshivat Chemdas Torah raffled off a ticket to Eretz Israel, and the Kluger’s won them. After that, the price of the tickets went up. The moised wanted to take back the prize, with the reasoning that the Kluger’s didn’t receive the tickets yet. It’s a dover shelo boi leolam.

A rich lady came to Bais Yaakov and told the 12th graders that she wants to pay for the wedding of one of the girls. The winner of the raffle was N. Eric. After the raffle, they checked the envelope and saw that another girl had entered her name twice. Is the raffle valid?

The shiur will take place Thursday night 8:50 to 9:30 pm in shul!

Standing on The Strong Foundations of Our Rabbeim

By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

This Shabbos follows the Chassidishe Yomim Tovim of the Yud Beis and Yud Gimmel Tammuz. We celebrate the liberation of the Previous Rebbe in 1927 after his arrest for spreading Judaism in Communist Russia.  A few months after the release of the Previous Rebbe he left for Latvia then Poland and finally arrived in America. Not only did the Previous Rebbe leave but our Rebbe also left Russia at the same time. Therefore this redemption from Communist Russia was not only for the Previous Rebbe but for the Rebbe as well.

What connection does the entire story of the arrest and liberation have to us today?  In  a fabrengen  for the Yud Beis Tammuz the Rebbe related the story as told originally by the Previous Rebbe. In those rough and difficult times of the early 1920s when they were closing down the Shuls and Yeshivos, the Previous Rebbe fought a warriors' battle, together with a small army of Chassidim to uphold Judaism. In the midst of this battle the Previous Rebbe called a meeting with 9 Chassidim altogether, completing it to a minyon. The Rebbe made a bris, a  covenant to uphold Judaism to the last drop of blood with complete self-sacrifice.

In the fabrengen for Yud Beis Tammuz the Rebbe asked why the Previous Rebbe decided to relate this story. Today we live in America, no one is running after us to harm us if we go to Shul or to Yeshiva. What do we gain today by telling a story about their difficulties then and how do we apply it to us today? Certainly the Previous Rebbe didn't tell that story only to relate their greatness at that time, there must be a lesson for us.

The Rebbe explained that self-sacrifice doesn't mean only to give our physical life away for Hashem, that means sacrificing one's body. Self-sacrifice refers to the sacrifice of the  soul, the essence and willpower from within us. When we are ready for self-sacrifice it's automatic and it applies to whether it is physical or spiritual. Therefore even in America it also applies. Self-sacrifice means to give our soul our will and our  being to Hashem.

This type of self sacrifice was seen clearly by the Previous Rebbe in Russia where he was in physical danger to uphold Judaism. When the Previous Rebbe arrived in America the Rebbe wasn't in physical danger, but there was a clear and apparent  spiritual danger. At that time the Previous Rebbe was confined to a wheelchair and limited in speech, nevertheless the Rebbe came out in force with the statement “America is not different!” and went about the business of transforming America. The Rebbe sent young yeshiva students across America to build a day school network. This was considered a revolutionary idea at the time that was considered by many (who openly voiced their opposition) to be destined to failure. Nevertheless the Previous Rebbe continued unabated while defending these young students from criticism for having full beards and wearing their tzitzis so that they are seen on the outside; much to the consternation of many of the Jews in America at that time. The Rebbe persevered upstream and against the currents of the time, proudly without shame against the spiritual emptiness that was America at the time.

This is what the Rebbe and the Chassidim accomplished in the past. Going from now into the future, how can we implement this level of self sacrifice in our daily life in the service of Hashem? The Previous Rebbe broke through and opened a gateway for self sacrifice that we can tap into that gives the power to serve Hashem on the level of self sacrifice. This means never looking backward and not to allow anything to get in the way.

If we were not serving Hashem with self sacrifice until now, is it too late? Do we still have an opportunity to change? In this week’s parsha Bilaam said (23:9):

“For from their beginning, I see them as mountain peaks, and I behold them as hills; it is a nation that will dwell alone, and will not be reckoned among the nations.”

Rashi comments:

“For from its beginning, I see them as mountain peaks: I look at their origins and the beginning of their roots, and I see them established and powerful, like these mountains and hills, because of their patriarchs and matriarchs.” — [Mid. Tanchuma Balak 12, Num. Rabbah 20:19]

We don’t have to create anything new. We only need to dust ourselves off and reveal the truth that we are rooted in the patriarchs and matriarchs, including the Rebbeim. By going together with the Rebbe we will be not affected by the world surrounding us. We don’t run away from the world, we are involved but unaffected by the world and unwavering in our self sacrifice to serve Hashem on the strong foundation which each and every one of us has within.

The Rebbe successfully  broke through the cold ice of America.  This is our example of what self-sacrifice is all about. This is what the Rebbe wants from us. The Rebbe wants that we should not be afraid, rather we should be filled with inspiration and desire that comes from learning Chassidus to go out and change and transform the world with  goodness and kindness and bring Moshiach today.

What Does the Red Heifer Have to Do with Us Today?

By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

Gimmel Tammuz fell out on Sunday of this last week. What is the connection between Gimmel Tammuz and this week’s parsha of Chukas? The Alter Rebbe brings in Igeres HaKodesh (chapter 28) a Gemara (Moed Katan 28)  that says that Miriam’s passing is recorded in the Torah next to the parsha of the Parah Adumah to teach us that just as the Parah Adumah atones for sin so too the passing of Tzaddikim atones for sins.

The Rebbe asks the following questions about the Parah Adumah. 1. Why was it the only korban brought outside the Beis HaMikdash? 2. Why do those involved in preparing or offering the korban  become impure? 3. Why is the Parah Adumah called on Moshe Rabbenu’s name and why do all future Parah Adumahs require the addition of some of the ash from the original Parah of Moshe? 4. Why does the Torah require that the ash be guarded (l’mishmeres)?

The Rebbe answered these questions by bringing a Medrash. When Hashem taught Moshe the laws of the impurity of death (tumas meis) Moshe Rabbenu turned colors, thinking how will the Jewish people ever become purified from such a severe impurity. Hashem answered with the words: “Zos chukas ha Torah- This is the statute of the Torah”. Why was Moshe Rabbenu so bothered by this impurity and not any of the other forms of impurity? It’s because the impurity of death is the most severe (avi avos hatumah). This impurity represents spiritual death. It’s a state where the person’s lifeline has been cut off. As the pasuk reads “Those of you that are attached to Hashem your G-d are all alive today”. We can be lacking in many areas and even impure in some. As long as we are connected we can be revived, just like a leaf attached to a parched tree can be revived with some water. What can be done when there is no connection? How is there even a possibility for cleansing such an impurity? This is what troubled Moshe Rabbenu.

Hashem’s answer was; “Zos chukas HaTorah”; it’s not based on a logical calculation, it’s a statute. Go outside, leave the Beis HaMikdash and get involved in the challenges and limitations of the outside world, even those aspects that are opposed to kedusha. This is a message to everyone of us to get involved in the needs of others and to give of ourselves, of our time and yes even some of our spiritual stature and purpose to benefit others. Because of his involvement with the Parah Adumah, Elazar HaKohen was unavailable for service in the Beis HaMikdash for the entire day and then into the night while he went through purification. This is the chok, the decree of the Torah. We do this because Hashem instructed us to go into the difficulties of others outside the realm of holiness without an end gain for ourselves, even a spiritual benefit.

The one who helps us and gives us this power to be successful is Moshe Rabbenu who said “Anachnu Mah, who are we?”, (meaning that it is not by our strength or power, rather by our connection with Hashem that we succeed). Our connection to Moshe Rabbenu and the Moshe Rabbenu of our generation, the Rebbe, touches the self sacrifice within us that is beyond the intellect and any of its calculations. We have seen this characteristic on display endlessly by the Rebbe who gave so generously of his time and energy to others. This is why the Parah Adumah, Zos chukas HaTorah, is called on Moshe Rabbenu’s name and all subsequent one’s have some of the ash of the original, connecting us throughout to Moshe Rabbenu.

On the other hand we cannot suffice with self sacrifice alone. A person can not make his entire Judaism stand on Mivtzoyim alone. We need the additional reminder to guard the ash of the Parah Adumah, to protect ourselves and to preserve our connection and to maintain our purity as well. How do we do this? By using the spiritual ash of the Parah Adumah of Moshe Rabbenu. The ash represents the nullification of our will to Hashem. When do we express this nullification? When we recite the Shema. It’s not enough to say the Shema alone and to express our self sacrifice to the unity of Hashem, but we also need to sprinkle that ash throughout the day by remembering our devotion to Hashem. This enables us to overcome our animal soul’s trials and tribulations. With the strength we get through our connection to the Rebbe, we are guaranteed success in our efforts to purify our surroundings, even the parts that have contracted the impurity of death, by sprinkling others with the living waters of the wellspring of Chassidus with sincerity. Through our connection, involvement and efforts may we immediately merit the 10th Parah Adumah, the Parah of the Melech HaMoshiach, now!

From Koach Sivan to Gimmel Tammuz:
Strengthening our Connection to Fulfill our Mission

By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

This Shabbos falls out in between the 28th of (Koach) Sivan and Gimmel Tammuz. Gimmel Tammuz has been a day of great celebration by Chassidim, the day the Previous Rebbe was liberated from Soviet prison.

This year Koach Sivan marks the 80th anniversary of the Rebbe and Rebbitzin’s arrival to America’s shores, arriving from France after being saved from the Nazi Holocaust. The Previous Rebbe worked tirelessly after being denied by the State Department and the American Counsel in France (in Nice and Paris), to secure their visas. Multiple miracles overrode all of the obstacles and they finally arrived on the 28th of Sivan. It is a day of great celebration by Chassidim. Koach Sivan, the strength of Sivan, the month of Matan Torah is known as the day that changed the entire outlook of America with the Rebbe’s arrival. It is coined the day of Matan Torah of the lower hemisphere. In retrospect, 80 years later the many fruits, the changes that occurred in America began on that day.

What does all of this teach us now and how does this help to prepare for Gimmel Tammuz? The liberation of the Previous Rebbe on Gimmel Tammuz teaches us about the Previous Rebbe’s efforts to promote Judaism and the dissemination of Chassidus with great mesirus nefesh. We relive the harsh experience of imprisonment in the pages of the Rebbe’s diary and in Sichos Kodesh of that time, 1927 and the Rebbe’s victory against a mighty regime.

On the Rebbe’s way out of prison, the Rebbe stood on the train platform and said the famous Sicha, that Hashem should be with us as He was with our forefathers. The Rebbe announced to make known to everyone that it was not with our will that we went into galus and it's not with our strength we will go out of galus. Hashem placed us in galus and Hashem will redeem us through Moshiach. No one has the right to change the education of our children. The Rebbe after all that He went through was unafraid and defiant while still in the lion’s den, with the Soviets recording this message.

This is a lesson for each one of us not to give up or be afraid. Although we are not the Rebbe, mesirus nefesh, using our willpower to overcome all obstacles is relevant to all of us. It reminds us to make conscious use of our willpower in the service of Hashem.

It’s been 27 years since Gimmel Tammuz, the Hilula of the Rebbe. There are more Shluchim all over the world than ever. How is it possible that young Shluchim that never saw the Rebbe but nevertheless fulfill the Rebbe’s shlichus with mesirus nefesh? This is because the Rebbe is with us. Although we do not see the Rebbe, we do not get a dollar or Kos Shel Bracha from the Rebbe’s hand. Nevertheless as the Rebbe said on many occasions about the Previous Rebbe that He has not forsaken His flock. We see this openly by the Rebbe and all of the Shluchim.

On Gimmel Tammuz we reflect on what we can do to utilize our knowledge of the Rebbe’s connection with the us to fulfil our shlichus. To put all consideration on the side and spread Judaism and the wellsprings of Chassidus, educate our children properly, have a Chassidishe home filled with warmth all in order to bring Moshiach. On Gimmel Tammuz we look and see where we are and what we can do. If we have any doubts we have to be like Kalev in last week's parsha who went to daven at Ma’aras HaMachpelah for guidance, so too we need to go to the Ohel to ask for help.

After a year and a half of not being able to go to the Rebbe due to Covid, this week was my first flight to visit the Rebbe at the Ohel and 770. To have the opportunity to daven and ask the Rebbe to help and give the strength that I need to fulfill my mission. If we have the feeling that we need a deeper connection, that the Ohel and 770 are the places to go; to be like Kalev, to be strong; then we will be able to, as it says in the parsha, go up and inherit the land, to go and conquer the world so that Moshiach will reveal Himself to the world.

Devar Torah - Shlach

We Have the Strength of Kalev and Now is the Time to Act

By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

In this week's parsha, Shlach, Moshe Rabbenu sends twelve meraglim-scouts to the place destined to be Eretz Yisroel, Eretz Canaan. Forty days later they returned, carrying a huge cluster of grapes, a pomegranate and a fig, and reported that it is a lush and bountiful land. But ten of the meraglim warned that the inhabitants of the land were giants and warriors “more powerful than we”; only Kalev and Yehoshua insisted that the land could be conquered as Hashem commanded. What lesson does this story teach each one of us today?

Chassidus explains that just like the spies had a mission to find the best way to conquer and settle Eretz Yisroel, so too we are all, both individually and collectively, shluchim- emissaries of Hashem to accomplish His purpose on earth. It is therefore quite fitting that on the eve of the entry into the land where this purpose is to be consummated, Hashem allows Moshe Rabbenu to send representatives of the people on a mission. This assignment encapsulated the essence of what the entry into Eretz Yisroel is all about: fulfilling our Divine mission as Hashem's emissaries in this world.

There are many explanations why the meraglim failed in this mission. In a sicha the Rebbe analyses three things in our daily life compared to the three things the meraglim said. The first was that they could not conquer Eretz Yisroel because it was too strong. Second, that they had an overwhelming problem with the nation of Amalek due to their lack of sufficient emunah in Hashem. Third, even if the Jewish people would have miracles in Eretz Yisroel, they would have to wage a war just to get there.

So too there is also an inner meragel-spy within each one of us that we need to overcome. It is our yetzer hara which does it’s best to convince us that we are incapable of fulfilling our mission in this world of making a dwelling place for Hashem. We need the strength of Kalev and Yehoshua to overcome any challenges.

The Tanya (Chapter 33)  says that the purpose of the creation of every Jew and of all the worlds is to make a dwelling place for G‑d in this world. Hashem guides the steps of each individual to achieve this goal. We are here in Los Angeles not by chance but rather Hashem orchestrated circumstances that we are here to fulfill a mission. We do this by converting every aspect of our lives here in LA into Eretz Yisroel, a place where Hashem’s presence dwells openly. This makes LA into a holy place.

Hashem never asks us to do something beyond our abilities. As Chabad Chassidim, the Rebbe told us that our job is to spread the wellsprings of Chassidus and Judaism to the world. Certainly we have the ability to succeed. The yetzer hara tries to convince us with a multi pronged strategy that we will not be successful in our mission. Everyone has yetzer hara. The yetzer hara has no gender or race bias, he comes to every one of us regardless of whether we are male or female, black or white, Middle Eastern or American.

The first thing the yetzer hara says to us (just as the first thing the meraglim said that they could not conquer Eretz Yisroel because it was too strong) is that where we live is not receptive to the message of the Torah and of Chassidus. Maybe somewhere else but not here in “Klipafornia”.   Just as people tried to dissuade the Previous Rebbe from opening a yeshiva in America saying that many had tried and failed. Although the Previous Rebbe was very hurt the Rebbe didn’t listen to them. No one believed 81 years ago that America would change and that America wasn’t different. So too today people say it’s too difficult to be a chosid these days. Maybe fifty or a hundred years ago I could have but not now in 2021. The environment has changed. So too with providing a proper Jewish education today in LA.

The second thing the yetzer hara tells us (like the meraglim’s second point that they had an overwhelming problem with the nation of Amalek due to their lack of sufficient emunah in Hashem) that we don’t have what it takes spiritually to succeed. The yetzer hara makes us feel unworthy of accomplishing great things.

The third thing the yetzer hara tells us (like the meraglim’s third point that even if the Jewish people would have miracles in Eretz Yisroel, they would have to wage a war because there are mighty nations that will oppose us and we’ll never get there ) there are way too many overwhelming obstacles that stand between us and our goal. We need to remember Kalev’s message that Hashem provides us with everything we require to get past the crass physicality, the cultural morass, the corrupt forces or any doubts to achieve our goal. Even if we require ladders to go heavenward Hashem will provide.

Nevertheless the yetzer hara doesn’t give up. The yetzer hara brings another argument and compares it to war. The Torah teaches us  that war must be waged without fear. We enter battle with emunah, trust and with strength that we will be victorious in battle. Since there are questions if we can be successful, the Torah says that we cannot enter battle and we must return home. Kalev went to Ma’aras HaMachpela to the burial place of our forefathers and mothers and prayed with humility. He asked for help to stay faithful to the mission of Moshe Rabbenu. So too with us, if we have questions we go to the Ohel for guidance. With humility we ask for Hashem’s assistance. We ask the Rebbe to intercede on our behalf and help us overcome all obstacles and fulfill the mission which will end the galus and bring the geula now.
